Research Progress in Biotechnology Using Extremophilic Microbes

The Department of Microbiology at St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim in collaboration with the Research, Development and Innovation Cell (RDI) and Microbiologists Society India(MBSI), organized a seminar on “Research Progress in Biotechnology Using Extremophilic Microbes” on 4th March 2026 in the seminar hall of the college.

The event was compered by Ms. Anezia Barreto, a TYBSc microbiology student. The Officiating Principal, Ms. Viona Correia welcomed the keynote speaker, Prof. Sunita Borkar, Retired Professor of Microbiology from PES College, Farmagudi. Prof. Borkar delivered an
enlightening lecture on the fascinating world of extremophilic microorganisms. She highlighted the remarkable ability of extremophiles to survive in extreme environments such as high temperature, salinity, acidity, and pressure. She explained the unique survival mechanisms that enable these microbes to thrive under such harsh conditions.

Prof. Borkar further emphasized the growing importance of extremophiles in biotechnology and industry. She discussed their applications in medicine, cosmetics, textiles, and bioremediation, and elaborated on the concept of bioprospecting. She explained how
extremophilic microorganisms are explored for valuable biomolecules such as industrial enzymes, bioactive compounds, exopolysaccharides (EPS), and plant growth-promoting traits, highlighting their immense potential for sustainable technological advancements.

Dr. Aureen Lemos Godinho e Gomes, Assistant Professor in Microbiology presented Prof. Borkar with a memento. Dr. Alisha Satwani, Assistant Professor in Microbiology, announced the winners of the various competitions organized by the department during a brief prize distribution ceremony. Prof. Borkar handed over the prizes to the winners. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Arzoo Mulla, Assistant Professor in Microbiology.

The seminar proved to be an informative and enriching academic event for the students and faculty members present.
