International Microorganisms Day

The Department of Microbiology of St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, in collaboration with the Microbiologists Society of India (MBSI), celebrated International Microorganisms Day on 17th September 2025 with great enthusiasm. The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Aureen Lemos Godinho Gomes, Faculty Coordinator of MBSI and Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology.

The highlight of the celebration was a seminar on “Marine Microbiomes: Ecological and Biotechnological Perspectives” delivered by Dr. Priya D’Costa, Assistant Professor in Marine Microbiology, School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Goa University. Dr. D’Costa elaborated on the critical role played by marine microbiomes in maintaining ecological balance and their growing importance in biotechnological applications. The seminar provided valuable insights into current research and future prospects in the field, enriching the knowledge of students and faculty alike.

The formal program was compered by Ms. Astrid Fernandes. Dr. Aureen Gomes extended a warm welcome to the gathering, setting the tone for the event. The Chief Guest was formally introduced by Dr. Alisha Satwani, Assistant Professor in Microbiology, while the event concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Vaishnavi Bale, President of the MBSI student unit, who acknowledged the contributions of all participants and organizers.

In addition to the seminar, the Department of Microbiology organized several competitions to mark the occasion. These included a Clay Model Making Competition, a Poster Competition, and Lab Legends: Micro Edition 1.0. The events saw enthusiastic participation from students, who showcased their creativity, scientific knowledge, and innovative thinking. The prizes for the same were announced by Ms. Arzoo Mulla, Assistant Professor in Microbiology.

The celebration not only highlighted the significance of microorganisms in everyday life and their impact on the environment but also provided a platform for students to learn, compete, and collaborate. The event was a successful blend of academic enrichment and creative expression, reflecting the commitment of St. Joseph Vaz College to fostering scientific curiosity and innovation among its students.
