Awareness Talk for World Suicide Prevention Day

On the 10th of September 2025, the Counselling Cell in collaboration with the Value Education Department of St. Joseph Vaz College organized an awareness talk to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. The session was conducted by Ms. Mitali Naik and Ms. Akansha Naik, Clinical Psychologists from Untangled Therapy Services.

The programme began with words of welcome by Mr. Varad, followed by the introduction of the resource persons by the College Counsellor, Mr. Xellion Gracias.

The speakers delivered an insightful session titled “Understanding and Preventing Suicide Among Adults.” They discussed the importance of recognizing warning signs such as hopelessness, withdrawal, behavioral changes, and verbal cues, while also breaking myths and misconceptions surrounding suicide. Students were reminded that even small acts of empathy, care, and listening can make a significant difference.

The session included interactive activities such as “If You Knew Me Better” and “A Note of Hope,” which encouraged openness, self-expression, and peer support. A short video presentation and a recovery story further emphasized resilience, professional help, and
compassion as vital tools in suicide prevention.

As part of the event, the Counselling Cell organized a creative initiative called the Wall of Hope, where students wrote positive and encouraging messages for those struggling in life. They then clicked pictures of their notes and shared them on social media to spread hope and awareness beyond the college community.

A total of 68 students attended the programme. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Anezia, who expressed gratitude to the speakers, organizers, and participants.

The talk powerfully conveyed the message that “Every Life Matters” and reminded all present of the importance of collective effort in building a compassionate and supportive society.
