Buttermilk Awareness Campaign

St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, through the Department of Microbiology, organized a Buttermilk Awareness Campaign in collaboration with the Microbiologists Society of India (MBSI), Goa Chapter, on 11 September 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the College Canteen. The campaign was conducted with the theme “Buttermilk – A Natural Elixir for Healthy Living” and aimed to create awareness about the nutritional value, health benefits, and microbiological significance of buttermilk.

The campaign highlighted buttermilk as a traditional fermented dairy beverage containing beneficial microorganisms and essential nutrients. Participants were informed about its potential role in supporting digestion, hydration, calcium intake, gut health, and overall well-being. The awareness activity also emphasized the importance of choosing freshly prepared and hygienically handled buttermilk.

As part of the campaign, participants were introduced to the microbiology behind buttermilk fermentation. The role of beneficial lactic acid bacteria in converting lactose into lactic acid was explained. The fermentation process was discussed in a simple and
engaging manner to help participants understand how microorganisms contribute to the taste, texture, safety, and functional properties of fermented foods.

The campaign also focused on promoting healthy consumption practices. Participants were encouraged to prefer fresh and unsweetened buttermilk, maintain proper hygiene during preparation, refrigerate it appropriately when not consumed immediately, and avoid excessive added salt and sugar. The importance of including traditional fermented foods as part of a balanced diet was also highlighted.

Approximately 50 students and staff members benefited from the awareness campaign. The programme was inclusive and extended beyond the student community to teaching faculty, non-teaching staff, and other members of the college community, including
canteen staff, MTS personnel, gardeners, and security/watchman staff. This helped ensure that the health message reached a wider section of the college community.

The campaign provided an opportunity to connect microbiology with everyday food and health practices. Students and staff were encouraged to appreciate the beneficial role of microorganisms in traditional fermented foods and to make informed choices
regarding their consumption. The activity also promoted the importance of hygiene, responsible food handling, and healthy dietary habits.

The Buttermilk Awareness Campaign was a meaningful outreach and experiential learning activity that successfully combined science, traditional food practices, health awareness, and community participation. It encouraged members of the college community to understand the beneficial role of microorganisms while promoting a simple and healthy traditional beverage.
