Cycling Workshop

The Ride. Repair. Race a 2-Day Cycling Workshop was organized by St. Joseph Vaz College with the aim of empowering students with essential skills, knowledge, and the confidence to become well-rounded cyclists. The program was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, covering aspects of fitness, bicycle mechanics, riding technique, and safety. The workshop was conducted over two days, with an indoor theory session followed by an outdoor practical ride and skills application. A total of 12 enthusiastic students participated in the workshop.
The primary objectives of the workshop were to:
● Educate students on the fundamentals of using cycling for fitness and health.
● Demonstrate and teach basic and intermediate bicycle maintenance and repair.
● Explain the science behind efficient riding, including pedaling techniques, cadence, and heart rate management.
● Develop group riding skills, communication, and road safety awareness.
● Provide a platform for students to apply techniques in a real-world, outdoor riding environment.
● Build confidence and promote a healthy, active lifestyle among the participants.
The indoor session, held on the first day, served as the foundational knowledge base for the workshop. The session was well-structured and interactive, ensuring all 12 participants were engaged from the start.
● Attendance & Welcome (2:00 – 2:15 PM): The workshop commenced with a welcome address and overview of the two-day program. Students checked in and were introduced to the workshop’s goals and schedule. The session set a positive and energetic tone for the days ahead.
● Module 1: Bike & Rider – Cycling for Fitness (2:15 – 2:45 PM): Mr. Deepak Ashanagar led a comprehensive discussion on the health and fitness benefits of cycling. Topics covered included nutrition, hydration, and recovery strategies for cyclists. A significant portion of this module was dedicated to the practical aspect of bike setup, focusing on proper saddle height, handlebar position, and riding posture to prevent injury and maximize efficiency.
● Module 2: The Mechanics – Bike Maintenance & Repair (2:45 – 3:30 PM): This session was a deep dive into the anatomy of a bicycle. Students were guided through essential maintenance tasks such as fixing a flat tire, brake adjustments and troubleshooting, and cleaning and lubricating the drivetrain. The resource person also highlighted the essential tools that every cyclist should carry for on-the-go repairs. The participants showed great interest, asking questions about common issues they have faced.
● Break (3:30 – 3:45 PM): A short break was provided, allowing students to interact informally and discuss the topics covered so far.
● Module 3: Science of Cycling – Technique & Efficiency (3:45 – 4:30 PM): The theoretical concepts of cycling efficiency were covered in this module. The students learned about various pedaling techniques, optimal cadence, breathing patterns, heart rate zones, and the principles of power and efficiency. This session connected the physical act of riding with the science behind it.
● Module 4: Group Riding & Safety (4:30 – 4:50 PM): This crucial session focused on the “soft skills” of cycling. Students learned essential hand signals, communication strategies, and the nuances of drafting and pacing. The discussion also covered road safety rules and etiquette, contextualized for Indian traffic conditions, ensuring the students were prepared for safe group riding.
● Ride Briefing for Day 2 (4:50 – 5:00 PM): The day concluded with a detailed briefing for the outdoor ride. The route was explained, the start time confirmed, and safety protocols were reiterated. Students were reminded of what to carry (helmet, water bottle, spare tube, etc.) and had the opportunity for a final Q&A session.
Day 2: Outdoor Ride & Practical Application
The second day provided the practical application of the knowledge gained on Day 1. The 12 students, equipped with their bicycles, gathered for the outdoor session.
● Warm-Up & Safety Briefing (2:00 – 2:15 PM): The session began with a dynamic stretching routine to prepare the students physically for the ride. A final safety briefing was conducted, with checks on brakes, tires, and the fitting of helmets. The route was reviewed, and group leaders were assigned.
● Outdoor Ride (15-20 km) (2:15 – 3:30 PM): The group embarked on a 15-20 km outdoor ride. The students actively applied the techniques learned on Day 1, including maintaining a steady cadence, focusing on proper posture, and practicing group riding communication. A mid-ride water break was provided for hydration and rest.
● On-Road Drills & Skill Practice (3:30 – 4:00 PM): After the ride, a dedicated skill practice session was held. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Ashanagar, students practiced:
○ Braking: Techniques for smooth, progressive, and safe braking.
○ Cornering: Proper leaning techniques and speed management.
○ Climbing: Effective out-of-saddle climbing and appropriate gearing.
○ Descending: Maintaining control and proper body positioning on descents.
● Bike Maintenance on the Go (4:00 – 4:30 PM): This was a hands-on, highly valuable session where students got to practice the repairs discussed the previous day. They practiced fixing a puncture and re-attaching a chain under the supervision of the resource person. This practical application was key to building confidence in their ability to handle on-road mechanical issues.
● Cool Down Ride (4:30 – 4:45 PM): The group performed a light cool-down ride back to the starting point.
● Debrief & Vote of Thanks (4:45 – 5:00 PM): The workshop concluded with a group discussion. Students shared their key learnings and experiences. A feedback session was held, and the workshop ended with a group photo and a vote of thanks.
Based on the participation and engagement of the 12 students, the following outcomes were achieved:
● Practical Skills: All 12 students demonstrated the ability to perform basic bike repairs, such as fixing a flat tire and performing basic adjustments.
● Application of Knowledge: Participants successfully applied theoretical knowledge of cadence, posture, and gearing during the 15-20 km outdoor ride.
● Enhanced Safety: The students exhibited a strong understanding of group riding etiquette and safety protocols, using hand signals and maintaining safe communication during the ride.
● Increased Confidence: The “Bike Maintenance on the Go” session significantly boosted the student’s confidence in their ability to handle common roadside mechanical issues.
● Fitness Awareness: Students gained a practical understanding of how to use cycling effectively for fitness, health, and mental well-being.
