International Microorganisms Day 2024

The Department of Microbiology, in collaboration with MBSI and the Research & Development Cell at St. Joseph’s College (SJVC), celebrated International Microorganisms Day with a dynamic seminar and exciting competitions on
September 17, 2024.

The seminar, titled “Biotechnological Potential of Halophilic Archaea: With a Pinch of Salt,” was delivered by Dr. Judith M. Braganca, Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at BITS Pilani, KK Birla Goa Campus. Dr. Braganca shared valuable insights into the innovative applications of halophilic archaea in biotechnology, shedding light on their potential in various industrial processes.

The event commenced with a prayer service led by Ms. Natasha Nadaf, a Second-Year BSc student, followed by a welcome address from Acting Principal Ms. Angela Serrao. Ms. Arzoo Mulla, Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, introduced Dr. Braganca to the audience.

In line with this year’s theme of raising awareness about the impact of microorganisms on human health, agriculture, and the environment, the college organized Model Making and Poster Competitions for First-Year and Second- Year BSc students. Additionally, a Poster Competition was held for students from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School, Cortalim. The winners of these competitions were honored with prizes and certificates presented by Dr. Judith Braganca. The event showcased the talent and creativity of the students, highlighting their enthusiasm for microbiological research and innovation.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Aureen Lemos Godinho Gomes, Faculty Coordinator of MBSI and Assistant Professor of Microbiology at SJVC. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Fey Aroma Da Silva, expressing gratitude to all participants, guests, and organizers who contributed to the success of the event. The event was compered by Ms. Analiese Fernandes, Second-Year BSc student.
