One-Day Judo Workshop
The Department of Physical Education and Sports at St. Joseph Vaz College organized a one-day workshop on “Judo for Self-Defense” on 29th June 2026 at the College Seminar Hall from 10 am to 1 pm, with 39 students actively participating. The workshop was designed to equip students with practical self-defense skills while promoting physical fitness, mental discipline, and personal safety awareness. The program featured a balanced mix of theory and hands-on practical training, led by two eminent resource persons: Ms. Nilofer Javali, an NIS Certified Judo Coach, and Ms. Kamini Yadav, an experienced Judoka and also NIS Certified Judo Coach.
The workshop commenced with a formal inaugural session, where Dr. Elroy Pinto, Director of Physical Education and Sports, welcomed the gathering and introduced the resource persons to the participants. In his address, he provided a brief overview of the workshop’s objectives and emphasized the growing importance of self-defense skills in today’s world. He encouraged the students to actively engage in the sessions and make the most of this learning opportunity.
The training was divided into two segments. The theory session covered fundamental Judo principles, situational awareness, the legal aspects of self-defense, and the science of balance and leverage. This was followed by an intensive practical session where students learned essential techniques such as breakfalls (ukemi), escapes from wrist grabs and chokeholds, basic throwing techniques like O-Goshi and Seoi Nage, and ground defense strategies. Both resource persons delivered their lectures with clarity and conducted the practical training with great patience and expertise, ensuring that each participant received personalized attention and guidance.
Throughout the day, the students displayed immense enthusiasm and actively took part in all drills and scenario-based exercises. The interactive and hands-on approach helped participants understand real-world applications of the techniques they were learning. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks, during which Mr. Infancio Correia and Ms. Aachal Naik presented mementos to the resource persons as a token of gratitude on behalf of the college. The participants expressed their appreciation for the valuable skills they acquired and showed keen interest in continuing their training in the future.
Overall, the one-day Judo workshop was a resounding success. It not only empowered students with essential self-defense skills but also instilled a sense of confidence and discipline. The Department of Physical Education and Sports looks forward to organizing more such impactful and skill-building events in the future.
