’Promoting Buttermilk as a drink

An awareness programme was initiated by the Microbiologists Society of India (MBSI) across colleges in India under the theme “One Step Towards Better Health”. As part of this initiative, the Department of Microbiology, in collaboration with MBSI, organized an awareness drive on 18th December 2025 in the college to encourage students and staff to include buttermilk in their daily diet.

The TYBSc Microbiology students actively participated in the event by preparing fresh buttermilk in the college premises. The prepared buttermilk was then distributed among students and staff of St. Joseph Vaz College and St. Joseph Vaz Institute of Education. Additionally, informative posters highlighting the health benefits of buttermilk were displayed to create awareness about its nutritional and probiotic advantages.

During the awareness drive, students explained that probiotic microorganisms present in curd and buttermilk contribute to better digestion, improved gut health, enhanced immunity, and increased longevity. They emphasized that buttermilk is a natural, refreshing,
and nutritious drink that aids in maintaining overall well-being.

The initiative was highly appreciated by all participants, including faculty, students, and staff members. Many attendees acknowledged the importance of consuming probiotic-rich foods and expressed interest in incorporating buttermilk into their regular diet. The event
successfully fulfilled its objective of spreading awareness about the health benefits of buttermilk and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices among the college community.

The Department of Microbiology extends its gratitude to MBSI for their support in this initiative and to all students and faculty members who contributed to making the event a success.
