Students Explore Mhadei River Ecosystem with Rajendra Kerkar
Valpoi, Goa – In an enriching educational excursion, students of St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, embarked on a field trip to the Mhadei River in North Goa, on 1/10/2025 along with 24 students of FYBSC guided by noted environmentalist and historian Sir Rajendra Kerkar and Assistant professor of political science Ms. Clencia Fernandes. The visit aimed to deepen the students’ understanding of Goa’s rich biodiversity and the ecological significance of the Mhadei River basin.
The day-long field trip included interactive sessions on the flora, fauna, and cultural heritage surrounding the Mhadei River, a lifeline for Goa and a region facing increasing environmental threats. “We wanted our students to learn outside the classroom, and there is no better teacher than nature,”. “Having someone like Rajendra Kerkar share his deep knowledge made this a truly eye-opening
experience.”
Sir Kerkar, a prominent figure in Goa’s environmental movement, highlighted the importance of preserving the Mhadei River. He took students through forest trails, identified endemic plant species, and spoke about the river’s role in sustaining not just wildlife, but also the communities that live along its banks.
“This river is not just water,” Sir Kerkar told the students. “It’s history, it’s culture, and it’s the future of Goa’s environment.”
The students also visited nearby heritage sites and had a chance to observe local conservation efforts, sparking discussions on the interconnectedness of ecology and community life.
Participants returned inspired, many expressing interest in taking up environmental studies or volunteering for local conservation projects.
The field trip was part of the college’s broader initiative to promote environmental education and experiential learning.
