World Senior Citizens Day
The Department of Library at St. Joseph Vaz College ,Cortalim celebrated “World Senior Citizens Day” on 21st August, 2023 by introducing a dedicated Newspaper Reading Service tailored for the elderly residents of Cortalim village, offering them a tranquil space and a comfortable environment to read newspapers.
The service unfolded within the college’s lobby, featuring a diverse selection of newspapers, including Navhind Times, Herald, The Goan, Bhaangarbuin, Times of India, The Indian Express, and Economic Times, available from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on all working days. On the initial day, three individuals who lived in the vicinity came to the college to peruse the newspaper. Noteworthy aspects of the service encompassed the warm reception provided by college staff, the establishment of a serene and comfortable reading atmosphere, the provision of clear guidelines including registration procedures, and the implementation of security measures such as sign-in/sign-out protocols.
The service has been started for senior citizens who value the peaceful setting and the opportunity to stay informed. Looking ahead, plans include extending service hours to accommodate more seniors, enhancing the reading environment with improved seating and broader newspaper options, and actively engaging with senior citizens to gather feedback and suggestions.
