Annual Sports Day 'Invictus' 2023 - 2024

The Annual Sports Day, ‘Invictus’ 2023-24, jointly organized by St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, and St Joseph Vaz Institute of Education, Cortalim, was held on 18th March 2024 at the Sts. Philip and James Church ground, Cortalim. The day commenced with a dignified guard of honor extended to esteemed guests by the sports secretary, general secretary, house captains of B.Sc, and representatives of D.El.Ed. This was followed by a display of unity and discipline through a jumble march past and a torch relay, where outstanding athletes had the honor of carrying the torch. Sports Secretary Umesh Padasalimani administered the Athletes Oath, and Fey Da Silva led the Athlete’s prayer. In his welcome address, Rev. Prof. Simao Diniz, the Administrator of the college, praised the participation of B.Sc and D.El.Ed students, emphasizing the significance of the Sports Day as the first-ever jointly organized event by SJVC and SJVIE. The event featured a diverse range of competitions including 100m run, 200m run, 4 * 100m mixed relay, tyre race, skipping race, langadi race, and tug of war, catering to the varied interests and abilities of the students. Additionally, students of B.Sc demonstrated their agility and coordination through Zumba and human pyramids, while D.El.Ed students showcased their talent in aerobics. Mr. Siddesh Kesarkar, Assistant Director (Academics) at DHE, graced the occasion as the chief guest, commending the student’s efforts and encouraging them to actively participate in sports, with a special appeal to D.El.Ed students to instill the sports spirit in their future students. The event concluded with a fabulous prize distribution ceremony, acknowledging outstanding performers throughout the academic year and on Sports Day. Notable awardees included Olwin Fernandes and Roshan Texeira for D.El.Ed who were awarded best sports performer and best sports person respectively, Umesh Padasalimani was awarded best sports performer of B.Sc, Shreya Mulik and Sharif Ansari were awarded best sportwoman and best sportsman respectively of SJVC. The competition culminated with team Chromosomes as runners-up and team Pythagoras as champions of the inter-house competition. Prof. Maria Fonseca, Principal of St Joseph Vaz College, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and dignitaries present, including Dr. Allan Abreu, Principal in- charge of SJVIE, and Sir Erwin Colaco, Headmaster of Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School. ‘Invictus’ not only celebrated athletic prowess but also fostered unity and sportsmanship within the academic community, setting a benchmark for future sporting endeavors.
